Physics 1 — Physics for Everyone

Physics for Everyone is a course designed to attract students from across the campus, especially those who not are majoring in science-related fields. The goal is to share the beauty and insights of physics. Many students will enter the course believing they are not good at math, and the course is designed for them. However, this is not Conceptual Physics. The course is quantitative, but in a manner that is very different from the usual introductory physics sequence.

Starting with a brief overview of the history and foundations of classical physics, the course flows logically to thermal physics, quantum mechanics, relativity, and even a bit of particle physics and cosmology. Whenever possible, examples are drawn from current events and daily life. Along the way, lectures cover topics important for citizens of modern society, including, e.g., probability estimates (balancing risks) and quantifying exposure to radiation. We will adjust the course topics to follow the interests of the students.

Here’s the blurb from the course catalog.

=======================

Explores some of the great topics in classical and modern physics, including quantum mechanics and relativity, and the connections to a broad range of inquiry, from daily life to cosmology. Math, mainly algebra, is used in a way that is completely accessible to everyone. (Formerly Conceptual Physics).  Fulfills the SI GE requirement.

There will also be a site in Canvas for students enrolled in the course.

Join the fun. Everyone at UCSC is welcome!
